Sokol, WBHS set for new campaign

The Winder-Barrow High School varsity boys basketball team does not return a great deal of experience from last year’s state tournament squad, but coach David Sokol believes there is potential for the new season.

“We are working with youth, but we have good talent,” Sokol said. “They need to see for themselves what they can do. They need to go out and get a few games under their belts.”
The Bulldoggs have several upper classmen on the roster but there is not much varsity experience overall.

“The coaching staff was talking recently how we only have two returning starters and another player who saw any amount of game action at all,” Sokol said. “We are ready for the new season, however. Everyone is eager to get going. We still have a ways to go and it might be a little rough to start with. We just will have to go out there and see what we can do and do the best we can.”

WBHS surpassed the 20-win mark a season ago and finished as the Region 8-AAAA runner up, hosting a state tournament game. The leading scorers from a year ago are no longer on the team, however, as D.J. Butler graduated and Alonzo Nelson-Ododa transferred. Trent Demeritte also graduated. Qua Flanigan is set to take up the slack this season along with returning player Jamias Davis. Flanigan scored 18 points in the preseason scrimmage against East Hall.
