Lady Eagles Take Seventh At State

The East Jackson girls cross country team closed out its season with a top-ten showing in the state meet at Carrollton on Saturday.

The girls placed seventh out of 26 teams, following only state champ Westminster, Blessed Trinity, Lovett, Jackson County, Buford and Bleckley County.

Sherri Blalock led the girls’ charge, turning in a 24th-place effort out of 184 runners with a time of 21:19. Other results included Courtney McDowell 37th (22:03), Skyler Cozzens 54th (22:54), Sheena McEachin 55th (22:55), McKenzie Parr (23:51), Amanda Anderson (24:08) and Caroline Flynn (24:50).

Cale Pirtle, the lone East Jackson boy to qualify for state, came home with a 38th-place finish out of 213 runners with a time of 18:22.

Coach Bob Roller said the keys to the race included Courtney McDowell’s hard sprinting during the last 500 meters to pass Jefferson’s number three runner.
