For the second-straight week, Jefferson put on an offensive showcase, and for the second-straight week a county school was on the receiving end.
After a 42-21 romp over Jackson County last week, Jefferson waltzed to a similar victory this week, blowing out East Jackson 49-15 at home Friday
(Click here for photos from JHS-East Jackson). With the victory, Jefferson (5-4, 3-3) finishes 3-0 against schools within Jackson County’s borders, thus winning the unofficial “Jackson County championship.”
Against the Eagles, the Dragons scored five touchdowns in the first half for the second-straight week and finished with 477 yards of total offense in their third-straight victory over their nearby foes.
"We were really focused," Jefferson tight end Hoytes Damons said. "We knew this was probably the best team they've had in a couple years."
Dragon quarterback Bryant Shirreffs accounted for 300 yards of total offense himself Friday, passing for 222 yards and three touchdowns and running for 78 more with one touchdown.
Jefferson running back Chris Jackson also had a huge night with 132 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Cole Givens led the Dragon receivers with 125 yards and two touchdowns.
Damons said he and his teammates had put last week's dominating victory over Jackson County behind them and came prepared for the Eagles.
"This is a whole different school, so we just came out focused and played hard," he said.
Much like last week's meeting with Jackson County, this game was over by halftime as Jefferson led 35-7. The Dragons had rolled up 355 yards and 20 first downs by break.
Given the similar résumés of Jefferson and East Jackson this year — both were 2-3 in subregion play, having beaten and lost to the same teams — the crowd on hand at Memorial Stadium likely anticipated a closer contest. Damons said he was surprised that Jefferson was able to dominate like it did in the first two quarters.
"I thought they were way better than how they played in the first half," he said. "I don't know, I guess they had a bad night."
Wesley Simonton led Jefferson defensively with 16 tackles, followed by Zach Allen and Kyle Mosley who both recorded 13. Allen had one sack. Mosley had a tackle for loss and a pass break up.
In addition to his busy night on offense, Jackson had 10 tackles and an interception.
With a fourth-place finish in the 8A-AA South subregion, the Dragons will pair-up with the no. 4 seed out of 8A-AA North next Friday.
"vandalizing" the visitors locker room in the Jefferson Field House. The visitors restroom was also vandalized. This is a sad and embarassing situation for the entire county.
Mike, how do you think the East Jackson Administration and Dr. Shannon Adams will handle this situation? Will players or coaches be held accountable? Who will pay for the damages? This simply cannot be ignored!
please come down!
You are taking this too hard.
You have a lot of deep seeded hatred for Jefferson.
Please get therapy!
