It is the final stretch before the 8-AAAA region cross-country meet and Madison County started with a strong finish at Banks County on Monday.

The Red Raider runners competed at Banks County to end the regular season meets with a first-place runner and second-place finish overall.

Now the team prepares to head to Conyers next Thursday to compete in the region meet and qualify for the State Championships in November.

Madison County earned second place with 42 points. Host team Banks County took first with 22 points and Franklin County placed third with 77. Also competing were teams from Towns County (141) and Commerce (169). Tallulah Falls also had runners competing, but not enough to qualify for varsity points.

Individually, Madison County won the race of 51 runners, as Corey Brakhage beat the favored Banks County’s Ivan Diaz by 17 seconds. Corey earned first at 18.16 followed by Diaz at 18.33.

Banks County’s next two top runners would cross the line over the next minute as the other half of the Brakhage duo placed fifth. Codey Brakhage (19.33) finished a second behind the fourth place Banks runner.

Madison County’s third runner also broke inside the top 10 finishers. Detrick Yamasato took ninth place at 20.25. Rounding out the rest of the field for the Red Raiders, Steven Tucker (20.58) took 13th, Dalton Owensby (21.10) took 14th, Tyler Terrell (21.15) took 15th, and Ben Larkins (21.20) placed 17th.
