The Wolverines come to town 2-1 in the region, having downed Social Circle Friday night 57-20. They also beat Athens Academy 28-7 on Sept. 24 before recording their lone region loss of the season, 40-7, to George Walton Academy on Oct. 8.
The Wolverines have scored 238 points, an average of 34 per game, while the Tigers have scored 164, a 23.4 per-game average. Commerce has allowed 181 points thus far in 2010, a per-game average of 25.9, while Prince Avenue has allowed 111 points, a 15.9 per-game average.
The good news is that the Tigers have never lost to Prince Avenue in four previous match-ups. Last year, Commerce romped, 33-7.
“Prince Avenue’s got a mighty fine football team,” said Commerce coach Steve Savage. “They execute as well on offense as any team in our region. They beat Athens Academy in their first region game. All of us have one loss. We’ve always had trouble with Prince Avenue, and I don’t expect the game to be much different.”
Kick off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
Spartan Loss
After a scoreless first quarter, a Commerce interception late in the second quarter gave the Tigers a chance to be the first on the board as they took over on their own 16-yard line. The Tigers were unable to collect on the opportunity, as they were only able to move back to their own 21-yard line, leaving the game scoreless at halftime.
The Spartans got on the scoreboard first, breaking into the Commerce end zone in the third quarter.
Commerce answered soon after, ending a 12-play, 80 yard drive with a one-yard keeper by quarterback Cody Streetman to make it 7-7.
With two minutes left in the third quarter, Athens Academy scored again, taking 14-7 lead.
Commerce answered in the fourth quarter, marching 81 yards in eight plays, culminating with a 20-yard touchdown run by Jessie Savage to tie the game 14-14.
The game remained tied until late in the fourth quarter, when the Spartans scored again to take a 20-14 lead after a failed extra point attempt.
Commerce answered on a 45-yard pass from Streetman to Anthony Norris, converted the extra point and gave Commerce its only lead of the night, 21-20.
With less than a minute left, the Spartans would score again, and a successful two-point conversion gave them the 28-21 lead and the victory after Streetman was intercepted with just seconds to play.
