JHS needing victory badly

With two losses and an off date in between, the Dragons (2-3, 0-2) haven’t won in nearly a month. So that makes Friday’s game with Oglethorpe County all the more important.

The Dragons, who lost last week to North Oconee 35-22, face the Patriots (0-6, 0-3) at home Friday at 7:30 p.m., hoping to break a two-game slide.

“It’s the next game,” coach T. McFerrin said. “I told them (the players) that it’s the most important one. In the situation that we have, that’s how we have to approach each game.”

The situation Jefferson finds itself in is 0-2 in the subregion and 2-3 overall, which is frustrating for the Dragons who were 5-0 at this point a year ago.

McFerrin made it clear that he wasn’t overly pleased with the season thus far but said this team doesn’t quit in the face of adversity. He said the Dragons showed that grit again last week, but still picked up another loss.

“I’m not going to be happy until we get a win,” McFerrin said.

Jefferson had the misfortune of playing two of the toughest teams in the region — Hart County and North Oconee — to start its subregion slate. So at 0-2 in 8-AA South play, the Dragons are still searching for their first subregion win.

As for Oglethorpe County, the Patriots are coming off a 7-0 loss to Jackson County this past Friday as they remained winless on the year. Oglethorpe County is off to an 0-6 start under coach Larry Milligan.

For the Patriots, this is the final leg of their three-week tour of teams from Jackson County. The Patriots played East Jackson two weeks ago and Jackson County last week.

Jefferson and Oglethorpe County are quite familiar with each other, having played eight out of the last 10 seasons.
The Dragons, who beat Oglethorpe County by 40 points last year (54-14), have beaten the Patriots eight times in a row.

Oglethorpe’s last win in the series was in 1997 (21-12). This is the 37th meeting between the schools.
