Despite losing the ball four times on fumbles, including three while in scoring position, the East Jackson Eagles still managed to defeat the Jackson County Panthers 29-14 Friday night at East Jackson.
The Eagles would take control early, scoring twice in the first quarter to take a 13-0 lead, with a failed two-point conversion on their second touchdown.
East Jackson would score again with just under five minutes left in the half, but again fail on a two-point conversion attempt to make it 19-0.
It was almost a larger margin after an interception at the half-time buzzer was run back by East Jackson for a touchdown. But the score was called back due to a penalty, leaving the score 19-0 in the Eagles’ favor.
A fumble at the seven yard line two minutes into the second half cost the Eagles another chance to score, as the Panthers went on to lock East Jackson out of the end zone in the third quarter.
Jackson County would finally get on the board a minute and a half into the fourth quarter, making it a 19-7 ball game. The Eagles would answer less than two minutes later with a field goal to make it 22-7.
Jackson County appeared to be on a roll when they intercepted a pass to take over on their own 17-yard line. After pushing back down the field, the Panther drive was foiled by an interception by the Eagles that was returned 60 yards for a touchdown, making it a 29-7 game.
The Panthers would score again with just a minute and a half left on a 16 yard pass play to make it 29-14. They would get no closer, as the Eagles went on to win.
Next up for the Eagles is a trip to Oglethorpe County to face the Patriots on Friday. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
