What started off as a rough week for the Lady Tigers of Commerce ended up on a high note, as they came home with third place from the Redskins Tournament at Social Circle over the weekend.
The Lady Tigers’ next game is against the Hebron Lady Lions in Dacula on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
As of Monday, Hebron held a 6-7 record, 4-2 in the region.
George Walton
Commerce started off their week against George Walton Academy, losing 8-0.
Taylor Brooks recorded the loss. Jessica Kyle, Haiden Nunn and Kaylee Partin each recorded a hit.
Next up was Athens Christian on Thursday. Commerce faired little better, falling 12-1 to the Lady Eagles.
Commerce’s lone run came when Jessica Parker walked, then worked her way to scoring position.
Beth Pritchett recorded the loss.
Next was the Redskins Tournament Friday and Saturday.
The Tigers got off to a bad start, suffering a 22-1 beating at the hands of George Walton.
“The next morning, we made some changes in the lineup and changes in the attitude,” said coach Pam Canup, who started five freshmen.
Commerce opened up play against Monticello, falling 7-5, with Kayla Burks taking the loss from the mound.
Hannah Crumley, Jessica Parkerson, Brook Vickery and Savannah Barnett each had two hits as the bats showed a little life.
“We had a couple of chances, and we did some good things, but we didn’t quite get there until the end,” Canup said.
From there, the double-elimination portion of the tournament began. Commerce picked up a 7-3 victory over the Social Circle Lady Redskins behind Beth Pritchett on the mound.
Crumley, Parkerson, Jessica Kyle, and Burks each had a pair of hits.
The win put Commerce against George Walton Academy for the third time in four days.
Going into the fourth, the score was tied 5-5 when rain delayed play for about 40 minutes. When the game resumed, George Walton made some lineup changes and pulled away for a 19-5 victory.
“The rain delay occurred, and we weren’t playing as sharp when we came back,” Canup said.
The loss put the Lady Tigers into the running for third place against Monticello.
This time, Commerce won 3-0 in a game called after five innings due to weather.
Burks recorded the win, striking out six batters in five innings.
Kyle went 2-for-2 at the plate to pace the offense. Heather Tyson, Vickery and Pritchett each had a hit and Crumley walked, reached on an error and scored.
