WBHS runners battle tough course

Facing tough weather conditions and a tough course, the Winder-Barrow High School cross country runners did their best Saturday during their trip to Carrollton.

With 95 degree temperatures and high humidity coupled with the course used for the state meet as a backdrop, several WBHS runners actually excelled.

“We had some kids who did very well,” said coach Michael Lofton. “Some kids seem to stand out the more difficult the course is.”

Amanda Cope finished first overall for the Lady Bulldoggs in their division. As a team, the WBHS girls were third in their group.

Skyler Lowe and Shane Davis combined to lead the WBHS boys, who were fifth overall in their division.

Lofton said in some areas of the course, mulch had been put down making for more difficult footing.

“There were some concerns about that from coaches because doing that affects your footing,” Lofton said. “Time-wise, we were not our best, we had some strong efforts. It’s hard to criticize when you aren’t the one on the course.”
