Lady Doggs seeing improvement

Things may be starting to come around for the Winder-Barrow High School fast-pitch softball team.

Coach Monty McClure said earlier this week his Lady Bulldoggs have been walking fewer batters, not making as many errors and starting to come around offensively.

WBHS scored 11 runs in a win against Rockdale County last week and eight in a victory against Heritage. The Lady Doggs also went 4-1 at a tournament hosted by Oconee County during the weekend.

“Most of the teams in our area had a full summer schedule and we didn’t,” McClure said. “Our scrimmage against Walnut Grove to start the season was their 18th counting summer and our first. I think it took us a while to adjust to the pitching we have been seeing. We are headed in the right direction, it’s just we are now starting to catch up.”

WBHS has a total of seven freshmen and sophomores in the starting lineup this fall.

The Lady Doggs are 3-3 in region play and 11-9 overall.

In the tournament hosted by Oconee County, WBHS defeated Dodge County, the No. 9 team in Class AA, 3-2 and also earned an 8-4 victory against Stephens County.

Helping lead the way in those contests were Ashley Waits and Kylie Smith.

WBHS has also benefited in recent outings from strong play from pitcher Kari Kiley.

The 8-5 win against Heritage last week was the first loss for the Lady Patriots in region play.
