The Lady Panthers started their season off with not one, but four wins over in-county rival East Jackson.
Jackson County hosted East Jackson in a scrimmage last Tuesday, August 12, to open the volleyball season for the Panthers.
According to head volleyball coach Crystal Colley, the Jackson County Lady Panthers were ready from the start and that the wins over East Jackson were a great way for the Lady Panthers to start the 2008 season.
“I knew my girls were ready from the start, when we stepped up to play East Jackson,” said Colley. “I could see the confidence and determination to win. It was a great way to start the season.”
While the ladies were able to beat their intra-county rivals in four straight games, the team did not fare as well in the Northeast Georgia Classic on Saturday.
In a complete turnaround to the previous performance, the Lady Panthers went 0-4 playing opponents that included East Hall and Eastside.
“We started out rocky,” Colley said. “Yet by the end of the day we were giving teams more competition.”
Jackson County did not take the matches, but did put up a fight for points. Against East Hall, the final game score was 24-26 and against Eastside 22-25. In both games, Colley said that the team came together and was working with each other.
“We may not have left the day with a match win, but we learned what we needed to improve and look forward to practicing hard towards a great season,” said Colley. “I was proud of the way my girls came together and started working as a team.”
Tuesday the Lady Panthers traveled north to take on the Raiders of Habersham County and a rematch against East Hall. The Lady Panthers were unable to best either team losing 25-16 and 25-6 to the Raiders.
The team did put up a tougher fight in the rematch against East Hall wining one of the three games but still failing to bring home the match. Games scores were 20-25, with the Lady Panthers taking the win, and 25-16, 25-23. East Hall took the match 2-1.
The Lady Panthers next face Prince Avenue and Oconee County at Prince Avenue, next Tuesday at 5 p.m.
