Jefferson’s Kyle Kashuba recorded a sub-19 minute time Saturday in the Dragons’ opening meet, running an 18:44 to help his team finish eighth in the Northeast Georgia championships in Athens.
Athens Christian hosted the event, which featured middle school, junior varsity and championship races in addition to varsity competition. Jefferson, ranked 10th in Class AA in the gatfxc.com preseason poll, ran in the 26-team varsity race.
Kashuba’s time of 18:44 was good for 18th overall. Trae Timmerman finished second on the team with a 19:44 and placed 44th overall. Jake Sherman also broke 20 minutes, running a 19:53 and finishing 49th.
Rounding out the Dragons’ scoring were Ash Warnock (62nd, 20:14) and Alec Jameson (64th, 20:16).
Jefferson, with 237 points, outran several of its region foes at the meet, including Hart County (273), East Jackson (289), Jackson County (432), Oglethorpe County (458) and Dawson County (462).
The Dragons, however, finished behind Elbert County, which the top Region 8-AA boys’ team in the event with 189 points.
Jefferson returns to action next Wednesday (Sept. 8) at the Spartan Ekiden at Athens Academy.
