Jefferson sophomore Cara Smith led the Lady Dragons at state last year and has picked up right where she left off.
Smith ran a 22:10 Saturday at the Northeast Georgia Championships at Athens Christian, finishing 10th overall and helping Jefferson finish sixth in varsity competition.
Eighteen varsity girls’ teams competed.
Smith was followed by another young runner — freshman Reese Bowles — who clocked a 23:11 to finish 20th in her first high school race.
Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Dragons were Laura Price (41th, 24:05), Holly Baron (61st, 24:43.1) and Allison Missler (62nd, 24:43.6).
Jefferson, which ranked 10th in Class AA, in a recent poll issued by gatfxc.com, finished ahead of Region 8-AA schools Dawson County (329) and Hart County (401), but behind region rivals Jackson County (81) and East Jackson (134).
Jefferson will run again next Wednesday (Sept. 8) in Athens at the Spartan Ekiden.
