Madison County’s Lady Red Raiders have been on a roll after defeating Cedar Shoals last Tuesday then sweeping Apalachee on Thursday in a 5-0 region match-up.
The ladies then went on to defeat Walnut Grove in the final round and earn the championship in the gold division of the Athens Orthopedic Leadoff Classic.
Madison County then headed into their next region game against Flowery Branch on Tuesday, where the Lady Red Raiders secured the win 8-2 over the Lady Falcons.
Coming up for the Madison County softball team is an away game with region opponent Winder-Barrow. According to Lady Red Raiders’ coach Doug Kesler, the Bulldoggs are dangerous and a tough team to play.
“We have played well for the first 10 games,” Kesler said on Monday before the Flowery Branch game.
“We are a little ahead of where we thought we would be. We have got to be ready to play every day, Loganville taught us that.”
Kesler also added that the Winder-Barrow team has a good pitcher this season and Madison County will look at controlling themselves to eliminate any errors that Winder-Barrow might use as an advantage.
In the series between the two region opponents, Madison County is ahead 5-1 since the 2006 season. Last year, the Lady Red Raiders won both meetings 1-0; 5-2. So far in the 2010 campaign, Winder-Barrow is 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the region.
Madison County is 10-1 and 3-1 in region play, with only the loss to Loganville staining the Lady Red Raiders’ record. The Bulldoggs are averaging four runs per game, while Madison County averages eight runs.
Winder-Barrow hosts the Lady Red Raiders on Thursday with opening pitch at 6:30 p.m.
Coming up next week, Madison County returns home to host Salem on Tuesday. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
