With plenty of warm days ahead, the Banks County cross-country team begins their season this week with a home meet on Sept. 2 (Thursday.)
Banks County’s runners are coming into the season after the boys took an eighth place state finish last season following a third place run at the 8-AA region meet.
This season, the Banks County runners will look to send both the boys and the girls to the state meet in November.
With several strong returning runners, the Leopards’ cross-country team is looking to continue it’s history of a strong team, while the girls are also returning some familiar faces, the Lady Leopards are set to make the push through the season and set their own records into region and ultimately at the state meet in Carrolton.
Expected to lead the team this season is Ivan Diaz, now a senior, who led the team last year at region then on to state. Also returning is Trey Martin who also made the trip to state last season.
Notable returnees for the girls are Maggie McCoy, Anna Gailey, Gabrelle Grisham and Janet Preza. McCoy, who led the girls at region last year, has steadily been a strong runner for the Lady Leopards. Grisham, Preza and Gailey also return after finishing last season with similar times at region.
As a group these ladies stayed within two minutes of each other on the course. Building off of the 2009 experiences the girls should see improvements as the 2010 season gets underway.
