CHS Cross Country Teams Prep For 2010

The 2010 cross country season is about to start for the Commerce Tigers and Lady Tigers. The teams will open their season on Sept. 14 at Rabun Gap.

With two weeks worth of practice under their belts, coach Mark Hale said the teams still have a lot of work to do.

“Right now, we’re struggling with distance,” Hale said. “We’ve got to put in some mileage. It was obvious that many of them didn’t do any running over the summer, so we’ve just got to get some mileage under us.”

Hale said the number of team members is up this season.

“Our numbers are a little better this year, with four girls and at least nine runners on the boys’ side,” Hale said.

Senior Sierra Martinez is the only girl returning, but the team picked up three new runners. For the boys, senior Jeffery Henderson is returning for his third year.

“He’s really the leader right now,” Hale said.

Joining Henderson are juniors Jonathan Leffew and Zan Peek, both of whom are also in their third year of running. They will be joined by several first-year runners.

“We’re pleased with the numbers,” Hale said. “We have more people, we’ve just got to get in shape.”
