Even with his team’s 35-7 win Friday night, coach Shane Davis sees plenty to work on for his Apalachee High School Wildcats before they return to the field Sept. 10.
“Hopefully, we can get in a little better shape,” Davis said Sunday night. “We are going to spend a lot of time running this week. Plus, Flowery Branch does so much on offense that we are going to need all the time we can get to prepare for them.”
Davis and the AHS coaches were set to focus on technique and fundamentals, especially early this week before concentrating fully on Flowery Branch.
Despite seeing some room for improvement in certain areas, Davis was pleased with how his team played overall last week against Habersham Central as the Wildcats kicked off the 2010 campaign.
“It went well,” the head coach said. “Of course, there were some breakdowns in certain areas, but we played hard. It’s nice when you have so many new kids on the field, even on special teams. It was their first time in the fire so to speak so it’s nice to get that first win.”
Zay Henry rushed for 102 yards on nine carries and scored two touchdowns for AHS in the opener. AHS attempted just one pass (a 34-yard touchdown from Clint Ashe to Jermaine Smith) in the contest as the ground game was put to work.
Stanley Williams added 69 yards on five carries while Alex Camp added 61 yards on 11 attempts. All three backs were seeing their first extended varsity playing time.
The Wildcats led 21-0 at halftime. Guy Hunt was a perfect 5-for-5 on extra point attempts.
Davis said the team emerged from the opener injury free.
“Right now, we just have to work on getting in better shape,” the coach said. “We had a few players suffering from cramps although you see that a lot early in the season and especially for a first game. Overall, we are in pretty good shape.”
