The Clarke Central Gladiators, who advanced all the way to the Class AAAA state championship game in 2009, are the preseason pick to win Region 8-AAAA. The poll was voted on by sports writers who cover schools in the region.

Clarke Central received all but one first place vote with the other going to Rockdale County, which battled the Gladiators in the state semifinals last fall.

Defending region champ Apalachee was third in the poll edging out newcomer Flowery Branch.

The AHS Wildcats were second on two ballots, third on two others and fourth on three.

The remaining teams, in order of their predicted finish, included Loganville, Salem, Cedar Shoals, Heritage, Habersham Central, Madison County and Winder-Barrow. The WBHS Bulldoggs were voted as high as 10th on three ballots in the 11-team region.

Voters included Jeff Cochran, Athens Banner-Herald; Jeff Gillespie, The Rockdale Citizen; Ben Munro, Mainstreet Newspapers; Danny Daniels, The Walton Tribune; Mark Turner, The Northeast Georgian; Chris Bridges, Barrow Journal and Brent Halloway, The Times.

The poll was conducted by the Barrow Journal.
