In what is being called a game to build on by the coach, the Jackson County fast-pitch softball team chalked up a victory in the opener.
The Lady Panthers took to the softball field Monday evening in the season opener against Clarke Central and in only four innings had crushed the opposing team 14-2.
Pitcher Haley Shinall struck out seven giving up only three hits and no earned runs.
Coach Tommy Fountain said, “Haley did a great job hitting her spots and never really got into any trouble. She basically dominated the entire game.”
According to the coach, Shinall as well as Becca Nelson, Macey Latty and Brooke Griggs all had big days at the plate. Shinall went three for four with four RBIs. Latty and Griggs both had two hits apiece and Nelson went two for four with an inside homerun and five RBIs.

“We scored three runs in the first and four runs in the second to go up 7-0,” said Fountain. “We added six runs in the fourth to end the game on the 12-run mercy rule.”
While the team did well, Fountain did find a few errors that could hurt the team when playing tougher opponents.
“We made some base running mistakes,” Fountain said. “We can’t have those hiccups if we are going to be as good as we want to be. It was nice to come out with a big win in our first game of the season. It was a game we can definitely build off of.”
While the victory is still fresh in their minds, the team can look ahead to facing their next opponents this Wednesday through Friday at Mill Creek. Wednesday the Panthers face Roswell, Thursday the team goes against Mill Creek, and Friday JCCHS meets Houston County. Then on Saturday is the Home America Mortgage Invitational.
