The East Jackson Eagles will get their 2010 season under way at the NEGA Championships Saturday in Athens.

For the boys, it will be the first steps towards defending their runner-up finish in state competition last year. The girls will be looking to improve on a sixth-place result at state last year.

Other teams expected to take part in Saturday’s meet are Habersham Central, Jackson County, Jefferson, White County and Winder-Barrow.

East Jackson’s Cale Pirtle, last year a member of the 8-AA third All-Region team, is expected to carry the banner for the boys this year, with senior Kyle Wood also leading a group of juniors including Mike Adair, Stuart Robinett, Edward Stone and Adrian Woodruff, along with sophomores Tyler Cone and Cory McClung. Team members Steven Bramlett, Sam Derochers, Rhett Vanderford, Quinton Rice, Lee Scroggs, Jake Thaxton, and Jordan Presley will round out the Eagles when they get the season started Saturday.

The girls, meanwhile, will be led by senior All-State runner Sherri Blalock. She will be joined by 2009 All-Region juniors Amanda Anderson and Skyler Cozzens, along with fellow juniors Courtney Clarke and Courtney McDowell.

Other team members include sophomores Sheena McEachin, Caroline Flynn, Cora McDowell, Elizabeth Allred and Corbin Williams, along with freshman McKenzie Parr.
