Commerce is scheduled to open against Franklin County at 9:30 a.m.

“Franklin has a lot of speed,” said coach Pam Canup. “I haven’t seen Pickens. Social Circle always plays great defense. They’re always a very good defensive team.”

Hopefully, last Thursday’s win over the Lady Indians in Hiawassee set the tone for the season.

Beth Pritchett and Kayla Burks played dual roles in the win. Both went 2-4 at the plate. Then on the mound, Pritchett pitched for the first four innings, with Burks coming on in relief in the last three to combine for the win.

Junior Jessica Parkerson also contributed, going 1-for-2 with a sacrifice.

“She did some big things we needed,” Canup said.

“It was nice to start out the region with a win,” she added.

Canup said she told her players that they would take an “ugly win” anytime.

“We had some great moments and some things that we really worked on, but then we had some things that we didn’t execute like we should have. But we hung on and kept fighting for the win.”
