This is the week Madison County softball fans have been waiting for – the start of the Lady Red Raiders’ season.
The girls swung into action on Wednesday, Aug. 11, in the first round of the Leadoff Classic played at the Madison County Recreation Department.
Madison County faced Morgan County, followed by a game against Elbert County. Not scheduled to play today, Thursday, in the classic, the Lady Red Raiders return to the diamond on Friday and Saturday to finish out the classic with two games each day.
Game times and opponents were unavailable at press time, but will be updated online at www.mainstreetnewssports.com as they become available.
Next week the ladies take on Ringgold on Tuesday at North Georgia College and State University. Opening pitch will be at 6 p.m.
Then on Thursday, Aug. 19, Madison County begins region play on the road as the Lady Red Raiders travel to Loganville to face the Lady Red Devils. The start of region play will be a good challenge for the Madison County girls, as the past three seasons’ games against Loganville have been determined by an average of 2 runs or less.
Even with the start of region playing right around the corner, the Lady Red Raiders are focused on this week and the Leadoff Classic.
The team knows what is expected, and according to head coach Doug Kesler, the girls have been very lively in practice and working hard.
“Our kids always give a great effort at practice and with having eight seniors that are playing this year, having been in the program for four years, they know what we expect and what is expected of them,” Kesler said. “We are at the point now where we are ready to play and go out and see somebody else.
While the Lady Red Raiders started a little later than usual on practice before the season, Kesler is confident that the team is ready and the six games the girls will play in the Leadoff Classic this week will give him a chance to look at some different combination.
“We play the best nine to give ourselves the chance to win,” Kesler said, adding that offensively the positions are almost completely set, but defensively there are a couple of spots that might see some players shuffled around.
“Hopefully when we come out of the tournament, we will have a good idea on how we lineup for the rest of the year. It is a good starting point anyways.”
