Most high school football coaches believe there is never enough preparation time. Winder-Barrow High School coach David Wagner is one of those.
Yet Wagner, like his fellow coaches, know at some point you have to take the field and see where you stand. The Bulldoggs will get a preseason taste of where they are this Friday when they host Dacula for a scrimmage at 7:30 p.m. at W. Clair Harris Stadium.
“It’s one of those things for us where the scrimmage is a little early,” Wagner said Monday. “You never feel like you are completely ready. However, it will give us two weeks to work on what we see in the scrimmage and two weeks to prepare for our first opponent (Rockdale County).
The scrimmage will be typical of most preseason games. Three quarters will be for the varsity with the final one for junior varsity players.
“Dacula has been a competitive program for a long time,” Wagner said. “It will be a good challenge for us.”
Official preseason practice began last week for WBHS and overall Wagner was pleased despite what the coaches and players had to contend with.
The first day of practice in full pads was also the first day of school.
“That first day back is always a bit of a stretch with so much going on,” Wagner said. “We were also not able to go quite as much as we would have liked in full pads because of the heat and that was frustrating. Later in the week, things went a little better as far as the weather is concerned so we ended on a high note. That always makes your weekend good when you can finish the week strong.”
During practice this week, the coaching staff is going through regular game week routines so the players can get accustomed to that.
“We can change up practice if we feel we need to work more on certain things,” Wagner said. “It’s all new to them as far as what we are doing for a game week. We want to make them as comfortable as we can.”
The first regular season game for the Bulldoggs will be Aug. 27 against Rockdale County, a team which advanced to the Final Four in 2009. The game will also be at W. Clair Harris Stadium.
