After weeks of preparation, the East Jackson Lady Eagles volleyball will get the chance to see their hard work come to fruition this week as the 2010 season gets under way.
The Lady Eagles will host a scrimmage on Thursday at 5 p.m. with Athens Christian. Then on Saturday, East Jackson will host a 7-team play date with Jackson County, Lumpkin County, Walnut Grove, George Walton, Loganville and Alcovy. The Lady Eagles will open against Walnut Grove at 9:30 a.m, then face Alcovy at 12:30 p.m., then wrap up play against Loganville at 2:30 p.m.
East Jackson coach Tim Thomas said that so far, they’ve been pleased with the team’s progress.
“It’s been a very good summer for us,” he said. “We had 20 girls participate in a great camp back in June, and we’ve played several good scrimmage matches. Last week we chose 10 athletes we think are capable of extending the progress made by our varsity teams over the past couple of seasons.”
Last year, the Lady Eagles ended their season 5-23 overall, and went winless in area play.
Thomas said the team has a lot to be optimistic about as the 2010 season begins.
“Our starting squad is by far the best we’ve had and the way they work together is remarkable,” he said. “They are much more fluid and cohesive, and we’re very anxious to see them in regular-season action.”
