When the St. Louis Cardinals looked for a good arm last week to help them in this year’s pennant chase, they looked to Madison County’s Jake Westbrook.
The Cardinals, who trailed Cincinnati by half a game as of Tuesday, acquired Westbrook from the Cleveland Indians in a three-team trade that included the San Diego Padres last week.
On Monday, the former Madison County High School standout fared well in his first outing in Cardinal red and white, pitching six innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven. Though St. Louis dropped Monday’s game to the Houston Astros, Westbrook left the game with the Cardinals leading 4-2.

"I'm excited to go to a club that's contending for a playoff spot and pitch in some meaningful ballgames," Westbrook told reporters after last week’s trade. "That's why you play the game, to get a chance to play in the playoffs, and I look forward to doing that."
Westbrook broke into the Majors in 2000 with the New York Yankees, spending one season in the Bronx, before being traded to Cleveland, where he pitched until last week. In 10 big league seasons, Westbrook, has a record of 69-71, with a 4.34 ERA and 663 strikeouts in 1,204 innings pitched.
The Madison County star is back on the mound this year after missing all of 2009 and most of 2008 due to an arm injury.
Westbrook has spent his entire career in the American League, which has a designated hitter. Now he will be a regular in the batter’s box in the National League. Westbrook has two career hits, including a double.
