Summer work nears end, fall practice begins Monday

“Things are going well,” Wagner said Sunday. “We look forward to getting some equipment back on. We are coaching them up as we go.”

The practice sessions this week for the Bulldoggs in shorts and helmets are part of their work preparing for full contact drills.

At AHS, veteran head coach Shane Davis and his coaching staff continue to press on with a solid workmanship approach this summer. Davis said he is eager for the team to return to practice in full pads.

“At some point, there’s only so much you do working in shorts,” said Davis, who led the Wildcats to the Region 8-AAAA title last fall. “We need to crack things up in practice and see what we can get done that way. That will tell us a lot as a coaching staff.”

The WBHS Bulldoggs have their preseason scrimmage set for Friday, Aug. 13, while AHS will scrimmage the following Friday. The regular season opens Aug. 27 for both teams at home.

Wagner has been impressed with his team’s seniors.

“We’ve got a great group,” the Bulldogg coach said. “Our senior class numbers in the 20s but each one is going to be vital for our team this fall.”
