The Jefferson Sea Dragons’ swimming season came to a dramatic close this past weekend at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association Class B/C state swim meet in Tifton, with the team finishing fifth out of 30 squads.
Forty-two of the 44 Sea Dragons at state earned medals. Swimmers qualified for the Tifton meet by finishing in the top three of an event at district.
“I am very proud of this team and the results from the state meet,” coach Matt Grant said. “I am even more proud of the team overall that they showed good sportsmanship, worked hard and made incredible improvement in their swim techniques.”
Team administrator Chad Klink praised the Sea Dragons’ work and the parents’ support in getting the program to where it is today.
“We did not import these swimmers,” Klink said. “Most of the kids have never competed in swimming before the Sea Dragons came along. The kids have all worked incredibly hard and the parents have really bought into swimming and the benefits of the sport.”
All swimmers 10-and-under competed Friday and the older swimmers on Saturday. The morning preliminaries have at least 16 swimmers or teams in each event. The top eight then go to the afternoon finals.
Prior to the swimming events, both days started a-30 team processional ceremony into the pool, complete with costumes and banners. The national anthem is then played as a swimmer in each pool moves a flag across each lane while performing a modified backstroke.
Jefferson had several standout performances.
The 8-and-under girls’ medley relay team of Ally Kate Navas, Kylee Novicki, Sydney Bowles and McKenzie Klinck won the overall title. Navas, Novicki, Klinck, and Sarah Beller also won the freestyle relay, completing a rare sweep. Jefferson did not have an individual state champion this year but came very close with eight second-place finishes within tenths or even hundredths of seconds of first. Second-place finishes included McKenzie Klinck (freestyle and backstroke), Haley Bartoletta (backstroke), C.J. Guzman (breaststroke), Bree Hanson (butterfly), Camille Porter (freestyle), Quincy Mashburn (butterfly) and Gabrielle Joransen (butterfly).
