Lady Raiders’ JV team putting in summer work

The Madison County junior varsity Lady Red Raiders’ basketball team jumped into summer practice full force last month. Between practices, camps and scrimmge games, the girls stayed busy, which should pay off come the start of the season.

According to coach Jackson Russum, the girls went full stride into the summer, with 12 girls present on the first day.

The majority of those girls would complete the summer training even with other athletic obligations.


“I was really impressed with some of the teammates that would pull double duties going from softball to basketball,” Jackson said.

For some members of the rising JV team, coach Russum is a familiar face as he coached some of the incoming ninth graders back in middle school.

“I was really excited to have the up coming ninth graders back,” he said. “I coached them when they were in seventh grade and they are fun to coach. The fast tempo that we want to play really suits this group; they are all fast.”

With the time spent this summer on the court playing host to some area teams as well as running drills and working on the speed and team building, the JV Lady Red Raiders should prove to be a handful for their opponents once basketball starts up next season.

Russum added that the girls worked hard this summer and he is looking forward to coaching the team in the upcoming season.
