For Ben Corley, coaching is a way to help assist young people become productive citizens as adults.
That’s why Corley’s new opportunity at nearby Clarke Central is an ideal opportunity for the man who spent several years as part of the Winder-Barrow High School program, including the last two as head coach.
“It’s been fun working and getting to know the kids here for several months,” Corley said . “It’s been fun to be a part of some new kids and new families and make a positive impact as they grow into young men. To be a part of that transition — that’s what coaching is all about.”
In his new role — or roles — at Clarke Central, Corley will serve as associate head coach of the football team working with the defensive backs. He will also be an assistant athletic director for the Athens school, which is a member of Region 8-AAAA, along with WBHS and Apalachee. The Gladiators advanced to the state championship game last fall.
The new job being so close to Winder is also a positive for Corley and his family.
“I’m blessed that we don’t have to move and we can also stay in our church home,” Corley said. “That will make it as seemless as possible. I’m thankful about that.”
Corley has been helping the Clarke Central players with summer workouts.
“Clarke Central is very rich in tradition and history and to get on board with a team with so much potential is exciting,” Corley said. “We have several players coming back. Hopefully I can help push them over the top and achieve the state championship goals they have. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to work here.”
Corley was released from his duties at WBHS following the 2009 season after two years as head coach. He was previously defensive coordinator.
“It’s been a long six or seven months,” Corley said. “I can move on and look forward to what’s new and what’s coming. I’m excited to be a part of this opportunity and look forward to this next chapter in my career.”
