Augie Grill not only won the 125-lap season-opening Super Late Model main event at Gresham Motorsports Park on March 13, but the Hayden, AL, driver also set a new track record in qualifying.
On Saturday, Grill will try to duplicate those efforts when he returns the GMP high-banked oval.
“That win was pretty nice,” stated Grill. “It seemed like we had the fastest car all day. It was good right off the trailer and we made a couple of small adjustments that made it even better. We might have been dominant that weekend, but I think a lot of guys have been doing their homework since then and we’re going to have our hands full trying to win again. Hopefully, we will have a car just as good as the last time we were there and get the same outcome.”
Grill is just one of many top competitors expected to be on hand Saturday when Gresham Motorsports Park hosts six divisions of racing. In addition to the Super Late Model 100-lap headliner, Saturday’s GMP show will also feature Outlaw Late Model, Renegade Street Stock, Truck and Mini-Stock divisions. Additionally, the Mini Cup Stock Cars will make their first appearance at GMP this season.
The Father’s Day weekend event will be free to all dads when an additional main grandstand or trackside parking general admission ticket is purchased. Dads are also encouraged to sign up for the Funopolis FanTastic Challenge where they can race a Funopolis go kart on the GMP track for prizes and trophies.
According to Grill, all those attending Saturday’s events will be treated to a special night of racing.
“It’s like racing at a NASCAR Sprint Cup track for us,” he said. “It’s a real fast place with a lot of grip. It’s real fun for me. I think it actually might intimidate some of the other guys, but the faster I go, the more I seem to like it. It’s just so enjoyable for us and the fans to go to a real nice place.”
Opening ceremonies get under way at 7 p.m.
