Spring drills are now complete and the anticipation to the 2010 football season in Barrow County is less than three months away.

For Apalachee High School coach Shane Davis and Winder-Barrow High School coach David Wagner, the coming weeks will also be important as fall practice approaches. Both coaches will have their players working in the weight room several times per week in addition to other conditioning.

The first games of 2010 are set for Aug. 27 with the Wildcats hosting Habersham Central and the Bulldoggs hosting Rockdale County.

Davis and his coaching staff will have to replace numerous starters from last year’s squad which won the Region 8-AAAA title (the first for football in school history) and later advanced to the third round of the state playoffs.

“We were able to get quite a bit done during spring,” Davis said. “We had so much to do there was no way to get to everything. It is going to be a big task replacing all the players we lost.”

Wagner, the former defensive coordinator at AHS, is now directing the WBHS program. With the basics now installed for the new offense and defense, Wagner said once fall practice arrives in early August every day will be valuable.

“When you have Rockdale County coming in for the opener, you have to be ready quick,” Wagner said.

Rockdale County advanced to the state semifinals last season before falling to fellow region member Clark Central.

The two local schools will meet Oct. 29 at AHS.

Due to the two-year schedule starting over this fall, the game will be at AHS for the second year in a row.
