Spring football practice wrapped up last week for the Commerce Tigers in preparation for this fall and the 2010 season.
Last season the Tigers were 7-5 overall with a 5-1 region record. The push into the state playoffs was cut short by Darlington in the second round.
This year the players are already showing early signs of being a typical Tiger team.
Head coach Steve Savage said the boys will be a “scrappy bunch” ready to hit the field come fall.
“They look all right,“ he said “It’s spring, we weren’t out there very long, but we got to look at a few new plays and different combinations of backfield and lines of scrimmages. I thought for our time out there it was well spent,” said Savage.
About 60 players attended the spring practice and from these, Savage is confident that the team will be fine in filling positions in the fall.
“I think we have found three halfbacks and a couple of fullbacks,” Savage said.
The three potential halfbacks are Addison Davis, Jessie Savage and Qua Little, while Michael Moon and Jamal Browner should come in as fullbacks.
Commerce will also have Anthony Norris returning after last season’s knee injury. Savage described Norris as “looking good” as both a receiver and quarterback.
During the summer, the Tigers will be working on weight training and some running. Still ahead is the 15th annual three-day offensive camp.
Starting on July 20, rising ninth through 12th graders will take part in the mostly option camp which will have teams from several other schools taking part.
Savage said he expects about 250 participants.
Commerce will start the 2010 season off with a home opener on Aug. 27 against Jefferson. The following week, Sept. 3, they’ll head to Franklin County before returning home on the 10th to host North Oconee.
Sept. 17 is the last non-region game for Commerce, as they face Washington-Wilkes on the road.
Following an off week, the Tigers will start region play, facing Athens Christian, Riverside, Athens Academy, Prince Avenue, George Walton and Social Circle on consecutive Fridays followed, hopefully, by the Class A state playoffs.
