John Siggers closed out his track career in style while Skyler Lowe and Tim Simonton were already looking forward to making it back to Jefferson in 2011.
The three competed at the annual Georgia Olympics last week testing their skills against the best of the best in Class AAAA.

Local athletes compete at state track in Jefferson
Siggers was fifth in his heat of the 110-meter hurdles Friday afternoon, just missing the finals by one slot. Sporting his usual crewcut, Siggers is about to embark on a new challenge: being a member of the US Marines.
Teammate Lowe, who as a freshman is just beginning his career, was 12th among a 16-athlete field. WBHS principal Al Darby said Lowe was the only freshman who qualified for the 3,200-meter run.
“The first group who broke away from the pack was really good,” a drenched Lowe said after his eight-lap race. “You just had to pick your pace and do your best. From the second lap on, I knew they were really fast. I just did the best I could.”
For Lowe, however, Friday’s event, which started around 7 p.m., is likely just the start of a storied career.
“Being a freshman and still making it here is great,” Lowe said. “I knew this was going to be a tough event. The whole state meet process has really been something.”
For Apalachee’s Simonton, the first time at state was also something he said he would remember.
The 2009-2010 school year has been one of firsts for Simonton. He was part of the Wildcat football program for the first time as well as the school’s state championship weight lifting team.
Now, Simonton was excelling on his own throwing the discus. His 133-foot mark at state did not come close to equaling his season best of 148 but the first-time state experience was something that Simonton admits he was not quite prepared for.
Overall, Simonton was 10th at state and just missed qualifying for the finals in the discus by one place.
“It was a little nerve-wrecking,” Simonton said. “My goal is to make it back next season and do even better.”
Simonton was the Region 8-AAAA runner-up and represented the team and school well, according to his coach.
“I am very proud of Tim and his accomplishments this year,” said AHS track coach Matt Sorrells. “He represented himself, our track program, and our school very well. I know he would have liked to have done a little better, but for his first year ever throwing the discus just making it to the state meet was an outstanding accomplishment.”
After throwing 133 on his first throw, Simonton intentionally scratched on his second and third throws since he knew they did not top his initial effort.

Apalachee High School’s Tim Simonton competed for the first time at the state level last Thursday in Jefferson. Simonton said he was unable to completely settle in at the event and as a result did not equal his season best throw of 148. Simonton said the magnitude of the event was somewhat overwhelming but he looked forward to making it back next spring.

I always love to see the sports photographs taken by Miss Brown! She is so talented! I know The Barrow Journal is fortunate to have her.
