This is unfamiliar turf for Apalachee High School football coach Shane Davis.
With so many starters graduating from last fall’s Region 8-AAAA championship team, Davis and the Wildcats are truly starting from scratch for 2010. That preparation has moved to the practice field in recent days with spring practice which will culminate later this week with a controlled scrimmage.
“We truly are starting from scratch,” Davis said Sunday night. “We have a lot of guys — both young and old — who are new. They are getting more reps than they ever have in practice.”
The AHS coach said he has never been in a situation like the one his Wildcats are dealing with going into the 2010 campaign. The only season Davis could recall which was comparable was his first at Oconee County when the previous year’s team was loaded with seniors.
“We lost 10 starters on offense from one year to the next,” Davis said of that Oconee County team. “I’ve been through it but it’s been a while. This year sticks out because we lost so many on both sides of the ball.”
That has made every minute of spring drills vital for AHS.
“It’s tough at times to decide what to do because we have so much to cover,” Davis said. “We want to try and establish some sort of depth chart this spring.”
Spring practice is scheduled to conclude Wednesday (today) for Davis and the Wildcats. With graduation set for Friday on the football field, Davis said there will not be a traditional spring game. The Wildcats will simply hold a final practice session which will likely include a controlled scrimmage/workout.
Players will then move into the summer portion of the offseason workout regimen.
Going into this week Davis wasn’t sure whether practice would conclude Wednesday or Thursday but since the weather cooperated earlier this week, the final day is set for Wednesday.
