As summer approaches the Commerce Parks and Recreation Department is geared up its schedule activities for youth.
Most of the activities are contingent upon sufficient interest through registration. Registration for the activities is at the offices at the American Veterans Memorial Park on Carson Street from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 on weekdays, unless otherwise noted. All recreation events are on a first come, first serve basis until spots are filled.

Aquatics
The aquatic center opens to the public on May 31 and will be open until July 30 between the hours of 1:00–5:00 p.m. on Monday thru Saturdays. Admission is $1.50 daily for pre-school through high school and $3 for adults. Season passes are available at the CPRD office. Swimsuits are required and young children must wear rubber pants or swimming diapers. Swimmers under the age of 8 must be supervised.
Tiger Sharks 
The competitive Tiger Shark Swim Club has two age divisions. The Minnows group is for swimmers 5-6. Children must have completed swim lessons before joining and turn 5 before June 1. The Tiger Sharks is for swimmers 7-18 who already know how to swim. Tiger Shark team members also have the opportunity to qualify for the GRPA State swim meet. Registration costs $70 for city residents and $90 for non-city residents. Deadline for registration is June 4.
Swim Classes
CPRD will offer swim classes in a five-day session for children 3-4 starting June 21. The 45-minute daily classes begin at 9:45 a.m. The cost is $50 for city residents and $70 for non-residents.
A more advanced class is available for ages 5-12. Two separate eight-day sessions will be held on weekdays only. The first session is June 7-16 and the second is June 28-July 7. The one-hour class begins at 9:45 a.m. Registration is $50 for city residents and $70 for non-residents.
Evening classes and private lessons are available for swim classes. Call the Recreation Office at 706-335-3236 for more information.
Water aerobics
A water exercise class is open for adults and is particularly beneficial for those with arthritis, muscular disease, osteoporosis and injuries. Experienced water aerobics instructor Sharon Pruitt will lead the Monday, Wednesday and Friday class. Classes start June 2 at 11 a.m. ongoing through early August. The cost is $3 per class. No advance registration is required. Children will not be admitted to or allowed in the pool facility during the class.
Summer Sport Camps
The Commerce Recreation Department also offers a selection of summer camps for basketball, soccer, softball and baseball.
Basketball 
The Champ Chaney basketball camp will stress the basic fundamentals of basketball for rising third graders through eighth graders. The camp runs 10 a.m. until noon June 21-25 at the middle school. Former middle school coach Sam Chaney is instructing. Registration is $40 for city and $60 for non-city. Space is limited.
Softball
High school coach Pam Canup will lead a softball camp May 24-27 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. daily for rising third through eighth grade girls. Players will learn the fundamentals and must bring their own gloves, hats, cleats and bats. Everyone will receive a camp T-Shirt. Helping Canup will be current and former varsity Lady Tiger players. The cost is $55 with non-refundable deposit of $10 due by May 14. The full amount is due by May 21. Checks should be made payable to Pam Canup.
Baseball 
For ages 9-14, varsity coach Stevie Cotrell will teach the basics of fielding, hitting and base running May 31–June 3. The baseball camp will be daily from 9 a.m. until noon. Players will be placed in groups according to age and ability and must bring a glove, hat, cleats and a bat. Everyone will receive a camp T-Shirt. The cost is $60 with a non-refundable deposit of $30 due by May 14 with the remaining balance due by May 31. Make check payable to Stevie Cotrell.
Soccer
For ages 4-8, boys and girls, the Mighty Mites soccer camp will be held June 14-18, from 9 a.m. until noon. Each player needs a #3 soccer ball and water or sports drink. Balls will be for sale at camp for $15. Coach Rich Friedman has nearly 25 years of experience and helped develop the East Jackson High School soccer program over the past three years. All teaching methods and exercises follow the latest US Soccer and Georgia Soccer guidelines. Costs are $45 city residents and $65 non-city residents.
