Panthers qualify two for state meet

The Jackson County Panthers came away with a sixth place finish in last week’s 8-AAA boys region meet, held at JCCHS.

The Panthers scored 56 points to overall winner Elbert County’s 146. Hart County, Oconee County, Eastside and Franklin County rounded out the top five, while Archer, Mountain View, Stephens County and Morgan County trailed the Panthers.

From that, two Panthers will be taking part in this week’s state meet at Jefferson. Charles Smothers took first in the 100-meters to qualify, while Jordan Perez placed second in the discus to send him to state competition.

Other placers included D.J. Ledford, who placed third in the 1600-meters and fourth in the 3200-meters. Darien Rollins placed fourth in the long jump. Dustin Scott placed fifth in the triple jump. Daivon
Ledford placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles. Zane Cochran placed seventh in the 200-meters.

The team of Cochran, Rollins, Jonathan Holton and Smothers placed third in the 4x100 meter relay.

The boys state track meet is scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson.
