Shelby Hanna, Kristen Clack and Megan Banner stepped onto the big stage for Georgia high school golf Monday.
And while the experience was a little overwhelming, Apalachee High School golf coach Kevin Morris said competing at the highest level will benefit the three Lady Wildcats, who each return next spring.
“It was good for them to be there,” Morris said of the state tournament held at Jekyll Island’s Indian Mounds course. “With no seniors making the trip, we all hope to go again next year.”
The coach said there was plenty of first-time jitters when the Lady Wildcats stepped onto the first tee. On the first hole, which was a par 5, the AHS golfers had scores of 10, 9 and 12.
“After that, we settled down and played pretty good,” Morris said. “There were some tears shed to start with. It was tough. However, they regrouped well and played the best they could. I was proud of them.”
While heavy rains moved into the Northeast Georgia area Monday, Morris said it was all clear on the coast making for a good day for golf.
The AHS contingent arrived Friday evening and was able to play practice rounds Saturday and Sunday.
“We were one of the top 16 schools in the state and that says a lot,” Morris said. “This was a historical year for golf at Apalachee High School and these girls were the reason why. We are already looking forward to next spring.”
