The Madison County boys' tennis team defended its home court and earned a long-awaited spot in the second round of the state tournament in the process.
The program qualified for its first Sweet 16 since 2006 by edging Whitewater 3-2 last Thursday (April 22) in Danielsville.
The Red Raiders lost two of three singles matches but swept doubles play to advance.
Madison County’s no. 2 doubles team – Connor Hancock and Josh Dooley — won with ease, 6-1, 6-2.
“Connor Hancock and Josh Dooley continued their consistent play,” Strickland said.
Jake Scarborough and Chris Dove had a tougher time, but won a three set match – 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 – at no. 1 doubles.
“In the second they had a little lapse, but fought through a tough third set to come from behind and clinch the win,” Strickland said.
