Lady Dragons start strong in region meet

The Jefferson Lady Dragons competed strong in the opening day of competition in the 8-AA region meet at East Jackson.

The opening day was pushed back to Monday due to Saturday’s rainy weather, with the finals scheduled to be held today (Wednesday) at EJCHS. Monday saw the field events and the 1600-meters completed, with the track finals being held today.

The Jefferson girls were in second place by the end of Monday’s competition, scoring 52.5 points to leader North Oconee’s 95. Following Jefferson was East Jackson, Rabun County, Dawson County, Walnut Grove, Oglethorpe County, Fannin County and Banks County.

Among those placing on Monday was Kasey McDonald, who took second in the shot put and second in the discus. Daniella Watson took second in the high jump. Summer Bartek placed third in the discus. Marcayla Hester took third in the triple jump. Lauren Taronji placed fourth in the 1600-meters. Rayna Davis took fourth in the shot put. Eden Starnes took fifth in the triple jump. Rebecca Stoudenmire tied for sixth in the pole vault.

Several Lady Dragons also qualified for today’s events. Baron and Hester both qualified for the 400-meters and the 200-meters. Iniki Allen qualified for the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Erin Knight and Taronji both qualified for the 800-meters.

The team of Regina Watkins, Holly Baron, Starnes and Hester qualified for the 4x100. The team of Hester, Starnes, Knight and Baron qualified for the 4x400.
