After compiling a 14-2-1 record during the regular season, one might think the opening-round playoff matchup for the Winder-Barrow High School girls soccer team might be a little easier than what it has been dealt.
One would be wrong.
Coach Ben Arms’ team will face Starr’s Mill, the No. 2-seeded team from Region 5-AAAA, in the opening round of the state playoffs Wednesday (today) but the Lady Panthers are also ranked No. 6 in the state.
Such is the case when you reach the postseason.
WBHS finished the regular season as the No. 3 seed from 8-AAAA with an 8-2 record behind Salem (10-0) and Heritage (9-1). Loganville edged out Apalachee for the fourth playoff spot.
The Lady Doggs will be led by Rebekah Autry, who holds the school record for most goals in a career. With Starr’s Mill likely to focus in on stopping Autry, WBHS will also look to players such as freshman Clara Tapplin in its upset bid.
Bethaney Murphy and Sarah Booth will pace the defense for Arm’s team.
