The Madison County girls’ tennis team achieved one major goal but didn’t have enough left in the tank to fulfill the other.
The Lady Raiders (15-3, 12-1) ran their streak of consecutive region finals appearances — an often-referenced point of pride for the program — to 13 but appeared to be a little drained by the time it played Heritage in a 3-0 loss in the 8-AAAA championship.
The team’s season continues today (Thursday) in the state tournament against Whitewater at home at 4 p.m.
“In the finals, we were just a little flat,” Strickland said. “Heritage has a very good lineup and we looked a little tired.”
Madison County’s loss to Heritage was its only setback in region play this year.
The Lady Raiders posted shutouts Thursday against Cedar Shoals (3-0) and Loganville (3-0) Friday to start the tournament. Jeannie Bowen and Sam LaZear dominated both of their opponents in rounds one and two, while Kaitlyn Hale and Abby Morgan “played it down to the wire in a very exciting match” in the semifinals to clinch the team’s win against Loganville.
But Madison County had a quick turnaround for the region title match with Heritage which proved detrimental.
“The players are not used to playing back-to-back matches, as we don’t do this in the regular season,” Strickland said.
Still, Madison County played for the title once again and added to the school’s long-standing tennis tradition.
“On the positive note, the girls did take (Lady) Red Raider tennis to its 13th straight region final and 13th straight state tournament,” Strickland said.
