It was a big day for the Winder-Barrow High School track teams Saturday.
The WBHS boys won the Monroe Area High School-Bonnie Mattox Invitational while the Lady Bulldoggs tied for first. The Bulldoggs scored 115 team points to outdistance second-place Clarke Central, who finished with 103.
Rozzie Johnson was named the Male Outstanding Performer for this year’s event as he won the 100-meter dash, finished second in the triple jump, anchored the 4x100-meter relay team which finished as runner-up, ran a leg of the second-place 4x200-meter relay ream and ran a strong 400-meter to anchor that relay team.
Coach Jennifer Blevins said the most suprising performance of the day came from sophomore Quintin Long who won the boys discus with a throw of 118-6.5, which was also a personal best.

“If we gave out a ‘GG Award,” it would have to go to Whitley Kennedy,” Blevins said. “I have never watched a girl run with so much pain on her face. She was running her second race of the day (the 1,200-meter leg of the distance medley relay) and had such a painful look on her face each of the three times she came by the finish line. The ‘GG’ part of it all was that she kept pushing and even lengthened her lead, through her extra effort, during the last lap. Whitley then passed the baton off to Amanda Cope, who ran the 1,600-meter leg of the relay, and doubled over in pain. She ran this race after a strong performance in the 4x800 and before she concluded her day of competing by running the 4x400.”
The Lady Bulldoggs tied Clarke Central for first place with 95 team points.
First-place finishers included:
•Brittany Witt, long jump, 15-10.5;
•Delorean Otabiyi, discus, 112-7 and shot put, 31-3;

•Amanda Cope, 1,600-meter run, 5:35.84;
•4x800-meter relay, 11:10.98;
•WBHS “A” team, distance medley, 14:26.86;
•WBHS “A” team, 4x400-meter relay, 4:44.60.
Second-place finishes included:

•WBHS “A” team, 3x100-meter shuttle hurdle, 1:28.75;
•WBHS “B” team, 4x400-meter relay, 5:04.22.
“WBHS won the meet and the weather was beautiful,” Blevins said. “The day was full of personal bests, strong efforts and team work. What else could a coach ask for?”
