It was a big win for the Banks County Leopards’ boys tennis team, as they picked up a subregion win over East Jackson on Monday.
The subregion match was delayed from March 4 and coach Mike Ruth, said that the exhibition matches played then was a wake up call for the players.
Number one singles, Trey Martin dominated his opponent with a big win 6-1,6-1 to put the first point up for Banks. Tony Yang as number two singles was blanked 0-6,0-6 while freshman Jake Schaefer as the number three singles faced a senior East Jackson opponent in a three set battle 4-6,6-4,4-6.
With East Jackson leading 2-1, the outcome came down to the doubles matches.
Banks’ number one team of Alex Banks and Chase Minish had lost the exhibition match on March 4 and Ruth said that it did them a favor.
“East Jackson did them a favor by beating them in the exhibition,” said Ruth. “Alex and Chase really worked hard to prepare for Monday’s match and to get ready.”
Banks and Minish went three sets 6-4,5-6,6-2 to set up the number two doubles as the decision maker.
Number two doubles team of Viet Pham and Jason Sexton came out in the first time playing together and pushed it to a tiebreaker, ultimately handing the win to the Leopards, 4-6,6-0,10-8.
“The third match was as close as you could make it,” Ruth said. “We got behind in the tie breaker and then tied it up before getting ahead. It was a big thrill.”
According to Ruth, the win over East Jackson puts Banks one step closer to the region tournament. Regardless if Banks wins or falls to North Oconee or Jefferson, if the Leopards can defeat Walnut Grove, the netters will be assured a spot in the tournament.
With the Walnut Grove match at the end of the month, Banks faces Jefferson this week. Weather permitting, the boys are set to head to Jefferson on Thursday to face the Dragon netters in a tough subregion match.
While Jefferson is one of the best teams in the area, Ruth is looking to use the match as a way for the Leopards to improve against top notch players.
“Jefferson is loaded up, they have an excellent tennis team,” said Ruth. “We want to try and fine tune our game and come out and make a decent showing.”
The Jefferson match is set for a 4 p.m. start.
