On paper, Monday’s baseball game between Winder-Barrow High School and Apalachee High School wasn’t going to be close.
The Diamond Bulldoggs had rolled to a 7-0 record and a No. 2 spot in the Class AAAA state poll. AHS, meanwhile, had posted three wins, and was continuing to try and find its place among the elite teams in Region 8-AAAA.
By the time it was all over late Monday, the host Wildcats had shown why athletic contests are not played on paper as they defeated county and region rival WBHS 8-6.
AHS rallied from an early deficit and then powered its way to the victory, using timely offense and strong pitching to get the job done.
For Wildcat coach Mike Cavey, the win couldn’t help but bring a smile to his face.
