Madison County’s girls’ golf team made an early statement in the region golf ranks, beating last year’s runners-up in 8-AAAA by six strokes.
Led by Cortney Boggs’ 48, Madison County — the defending region champions — downed Habersham Central 97-103 at Apple Mountain Monday to move to 2-0.
Kelsey Hochstetler rounded out the scoring with a 49.
Coach Doug Kesler said his team is playing better, but needs to work on its shots around the green.
“We’ve got to go work a little bit on the short game, and I think we’ll see those numbers get better,” he said. “It’s early in the season.”
Emily Mann (55) and Katie Jane Phillips (56) also played, but their scores didn’t count.
Madison County opened its season March 4 with a 102-120 victory over Hart County at Cateechee despite inclement weather.
Boggs and Hochstetler both shot 51.
“The conditions were just terrible — tough course, wind blowing, freezing cold,” Kesler said. “They did well to be able to overcome that and shoot as well as they did.”
The Madison County girls return to the course March 15, against East Jackson and North Oconee at Sunrise Golf Course. The team plays again Tuesday against North Oconee at Lane Creek.
