The Madison County High School girls’ tennis team had to rely on its depth to keep its undefeated season alive.
Missing three starters due to illness and injury, the Lady Raiders beat Habersham Central 3-2 at home Tuesday to move to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in subregion play.
“Having some depth on the team helped us to get the team win,” coach Keith Strickland said.
The Lady Raiders got wins from Jeannie Bowen at no. 1 singles, Alexia Supakorndej at no. 2 singles and the no. 2 doubles team of Abby Morgan and Jenny Ortman.
“Alexia Supakorndej did a great job filling in at no. 2 singles, winning in straight sets … Abby Morgan and Jenny Ortman played a good match at no. 2 doubles to give us the team win,” Strickland said.
Madison County’s Wednesday match with Hart County was canceled. The team plays Thursday at Apalachee and Tuesday at Winder-Barrow.
Prior to beating Habersham Central, the Lady Raiders downed an understaffed Cedar Shoals team 5-0 Friday (March 5). Cedar Shoals fielded no doubles teams, so Madison County won those matches by forfeit.
The Madison County girls blanked Clarke Central 5-0 a day earlier (March 4) on a gusty day on the tennis court to win their subregion opener.
Strickland noted the play of Audra Minish, who rebounded from a loss in her first set to record a victory at no. 3 singles.
Madison County recorded straight-set victories at all the other positions.
“As coaches, we tell the players that they need to win big the first time we see our sub-region opponents so they feel the pressure the second time around,” Strickland said.
Before that, the Lady Raiders beat Morgan County 3-2 last Wednesday (March 3), getting victories from Bowen (no. 1 singles) and Adrienne Fitzpatrick (no. 2 singles) and the duo of KayLee Bates and Abby Morgan (no. 2 doubles).
“The no. 2 girls’ doubles team played well but can still improve on putting a match away,” Strickland said.
Strickland noted that Fitzpatrick tweaked her ankle after winning her first set and lost the second set but managed to win the third.
“Adrienne Fitzpatrick played a great match,” he said.
