Yes, it still very early in the 2010 baseball season for Winder-Barrow High School.
Heck, it hasn’t even really warmed up yet. Friday night as the Diamond Doggs were crushing North Oconee on the baseball field, spectators, including yours truly, were gathered around heaters trying to stay warm.
Yet, as coach Brian Smith’s team has raced out to a 6-0 start, one cannot deny the fact it has looked mighty impressive in the process. Friday’s 13-3 victory against North Oconee, a team which has field strong squads in recent seasons, was just one such victory.
What has been so impressive about the early season success by WBHS has been the Doggs seemed to be excelling in all aspects of the game. The pitching has been there, the offense has certainly been there and the defense has been solid. Usually having two of the three will spell success for a team, but when you have all three, then look out.
After advancing to the second round of the state playoffs last spring, Smith’s team appears, at least at this point of the 2010 campaign, to be primed for even more success. I keep telling myself it’s early (you can be assured Smith is telling the players as much) but usually a team has to work out some early-season bugs before playing as well as WBHS has been.
Once the cold weather leaves us (cold weather does not mix well with baseball as it makes it tough on pitchers) then the dominating performances we’ve seen from this team just may get even more dominating. It truly appears the sky may be the limit for this team.
Granted, even high school teams have a long season and there will be some bumps along the way. However, winning games helps generate confidence. The more games a team wins — especially early in the season — the more confidence that team is going to have. With six victories in their first six outings, the Diamond Doggs have shown they are a force to be dealt with in 2010.
Get ready for what could be a very memorable season for WBHS on the baseball field. They have all the necessary ingredients for a deep run. I know we’re just getting started, but this group of players and coaches have shown they have everything it takes to be successful at a very high level.
