The Apalachee High School weightlifting team has enjoyed its share of success in recent years.
The team will look to continue that success this Saturday as AHS will take part in the area competition, hosted by Rockdale County High School. The Wildcats have won the past three area titles.
“You never know how it’s going to go until you get there,” said AHS coach Shane Davis. “It’s not like football where you watch film and scout your opponents. There’s nothing to compare it to other than the past and past numbers. However, I believe our guys should be able to hold their own.”
The weigh ins are set from 7:45-8:15 a.m. Saturday following by a coaches’ meeting. The competition is set to begin at approximately 9:15 a.m.
The state weightlifting competition will be March 20 at the Perry Fairgrounds.
Davis said Sunday he is continuing the search process for a new defensive coordinator to replace David Wagner, who was named the new head coach at Winder-Barrow High School.
“We are still working on it,” Davis said. “No decision has been made yet. It is taking a little longer than I had hoped. We want to make the right decision.”
The AHS football coach said he has talked with “several qualified people,” but noted he wants to hire the right fit for the program.
Davis, who led his team to an undefeated regular season and the Region 8-AAAA title this past fall, said spring practice will be in late May.
