There are a couple of new teams waiting to face the Black and Gold gridiron Tigers in the 2010 season, but none have coach Steve Savage particularly worried.
With Jefferson firmly seated as the season opener, Aug. 27, the next round of the River War is locked in, but the rest of the schedule has seen some changes.
Commerce will face opponents the Tigers have not seen in a several years as well as a couple of newcomers to the region.
Following the home opener with Jefferson, Commerce will face Franklin County (Sept. 3) a week earlier than in the past season. The Tigers return home after the Carnesville trek to host North Oconee (Sept. 10).
With a five-year hiatus since the schools’ last meeting, the Tigers will get to see if they still have what it takes to repeat a 52-7 victory over the Titans.
Before Commerce gets into region play, the Tigers are scheduled to face Washington Wilkes (Sept. 17) on the road. In the 2001 season, the WW Tigers left a bad taste in Commerce’s mouth with a 49-26 shellacking.
Savage said he’s looking forward to playing those teams, adding that it will be interesting to see how Commerce stacks up, and both games should draw large crowds.
With an off week closing out September, the Tigers will begin region play Oct. 1, at Athens Christian, which the Tigers beat 35-17 last season.
The following week, Commerce hosts newcomer to 8-A Riverside Military (Oct. 8). Riverside dropped from 8-AA where the Eagles were 5-6 last year. According to the history books, the only other time Commerce has faced the Riverside Eagles was in 1944.
Commerce heads to a more familiar opponent the next week, taking on Athens Academy (Oct. 15) for the third region game, followed by Prince Avenue, both of whom Commerce handled last year.
The final game of the month will finish out the home schedule as the Tigers host region newcomer George Walton Academy (Oct. 29) in the first meeting between the two teams. Last season, George Walton was 6-3 in 1-IAAA play.
Commerce closes the regular football season on the road Nov. 5 at Social Circle, a team the Tigers demolished 42-14 in 2009.
