Tiger Wrestlers Third At State, Place 10 In Finals

Commerce waylaid the competition at the Area Tournament and pushed all 14 wrestlers into last week’s traditional state tournament where 10 of 14 competitors placed and the Tigers placed third as a team.

Bremen finished first, Gordon Lee taking second, Wesleyan fourth and Bowdon fifth.

The state meet was at the Gwinnett Arena.


“We had a very successful state tournament,” said coach Kendall Love. “I felt like most of the guys wrestled about as good as they could have.”

According to Love, several of the Commerce wrestlers won matches over opponents that had beaten them during the season.

Commerce returned from the state tournament with one state champion and three runners-up.

The Tigers’ state champ, Nick Arostegui, defeated Athens Christian’s grappler in the 152-pound class to secure the title.
